I am a Massage Geek. That is, I am on the computer way too much, I have been playing D&D and other games far too long, and I can converse intelligently which of the Start Trek Capitans would be best able to fight Darth Vader.
Also, I am passionate about massage. I have always done massage, among friends and family. It was only after the being laid off from a Silicon Valley internet company, for the fourth time in four years, that I decided I would rather do tech support on people than on computers.
The first class I took was Anatomy, and I was hooked. Seeing how people move, how they hold their tensions, how small and subtle things done all day, every day can build up to big problems, that will not simply go away. And from there, I learned what I can do to release those tensions.
Then I started learning about more subtle methods. About using my hands to listen for the little changes in the muscle, that are the beginning of a knot, or the quiet slow rhythmic cycles and circulations of energy through the body. How to find where it is blocked, or stagnant. And the small, quiet, subtle things I can do to release those tensions, to create freedom of movement and the free flow of energy.
Out of school, in practice, I have learned to not limit myself. I will use any tool, any trick, anything I know to make a massage the best it can be. I listen to what my clients are saying, and what my clients are feeling. I find where the tensions are held, and I release that tension. And then on to the next.
And I never stop learning.
