Massage shouldn't hurt. When a client's body is craving pain-reduction, it's counter-productive to inflict pain in the name of health (which includes the often-advertised "deep tissue" massage). By mashing tissues, or by forcing them to stretch and move before they're ready to move, a therapist can actually create new injuries in their client's body. Instead, I listen to my client's body; if it needs me to be deep in the tissue, it will guide me there.. but I don't force my way in if their body isn't ready. The work I do is slow, gentle, responsive, powerful, and effective. (Emphasis on effective, whether the goal is injury treatment, chronic pain reduction, or global relaxation of the nervous system.) I employ a variety of modalities -- sometimes blending them, sometimes not. With all of my tools, I listen to my client's needs and respond accordingly. It's a holistic approach to treating the entire client, not just their latest symptom.
